Spring Fine Art Auction - June 20-21, 2008
Spring Is Here!

Twelve Dorothy Doughty Bird Pairs

It’s time for flowers and songbirds and a super selection of the finest quality Art and Antiques from Estates throughout the Midwest.

Hester Bateman (1709 – 1794)
There’s fine English Silver from the widely exhibited Gillmor collection of Kansas City. For nearly fifty years Mrs. Gillmor studied, lectured on, exhibited and collected 17th and 18th Century English Silver. Her supporting documents and receipts of purchase read like a Who’s Who of The London Silver Vaults during the 1950s. It seems that the decade following World War II was a golden era for acquiring early English silver and Dr. and Mrs. Gillmor secured some real gems. Apparently Hester Bateman was among their favorite silversmiths and some real beauties by Bateman and others will be up for bid -  many for the first time ever.

Equally fresh and rare artwork will be offered from a Florida collection. Included are two 1827 Havell edition aquatint engravings from John James Audubon’s BIRDS OF AMERICA.

These “elephant folio” works are printed on watermarked J. Whatman Turkey Mill paper and both are in a fine state of preservation. The rarest of these is the controversial and dramatic plate number 21 which depicts a tree-climbing Rattlesnake raiding the nest of a Mocking Bird. It carries an estimate of $15,000 to $30,000.

This same collection offers up one of the other stars of the show – a 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas by Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) also estimated in the $15,000 to $30,000 range.

In the art department we’ll also have a collection of pencil-signed American prints from three local estates and a Mid-west institution. Many of the Associated American Artists members will be represented in mediums that include lithographs, etchings, wood engravings aquatint engravings etc., circa 1930 to 1960. Kansas City artists include Thomas Hart Benton and Ross Braught. A highlight from this group is an exceptional example of the iconic 1940’s drypoint known as "MEN OF STEEL" by Samuel L. Margolies (1897-1978).

From Oklahoma comes this credenza attributed to French born New York cabinetmaker Alexander Roux (1813 – 1898). It’s been in the same home for more than 35 years and is accompanied by two similar credenzas of European origin. Sevres porcelain plaques adorn the Alexander Roux cabinet.

Charles Shipley, Kansas City
While this offering may be a bit unconventional in its variety, it will certainly serve to satisfy the interests of connoisseurs from various fields of collecting.

There will be American Indian theme paintings and works of art created by American Indians in the Historic and later periods. This includes examples of fine old beadwork from a Nebraska estate and some high-grade contemporary weavings by noted Navajo artists. There is some exceptional jewelry as well. Among the highlights in this portion of the sale will be a late Third Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket, again fresh to the market from a Topeka, Kansas collection.

Ramon Rice (1928 – 1985)
